' 1r I il 20 A few more hints for using the coupled exposure i meter I i When taking a reading in bright sunshine, tilt the camera slightly downwards, otherwise the subject which ie silhouetted against the sky is liable to be under exposed. If the subject motif contains very bright and very dark components, measure the darker components of the picture. It is even better in such cases to measure the most important part of the motif at close range. To do this, stand as near as possible to the most important part of the subject, so that, even when approached closer, the indicator of the exposure meter doeg not move appreciably. l " Good results with colour photography depend entirely on the exact combination of the functions of camera shutter and exposure meter, and on a careful development of the film. As there is no standard system of measuring the speed of colour films, we advise you when buying a colour film to ask the supplier whether that shown on the packet or another DIN or ASA value should be used. www.butkus.us i �The \ \ use of filters Using a filter necessitates either increased exposure time or a larger lens aperture. More detailed information on this subject can be obtainet from the instructione which are supplied with the filter. Hints on taking photographs The reading obtained with the automatic exposure meter provides you with a number of combinations of lens aperture and exposure times which are suitable for different kinds of motifs. If the subject of your picture is a landscape, for instance, the lens aperture setting ehould be euch as will give a large depth of field (see remarks coneerning depth of field on page 22\. If, on the other hand, you intend taking a sports or snapshot, you should use a fairly short exposure, about I/300 or 1/125 sec. Although the combined aperture and time readings are not subject to autDmatic or accidental variation, it is nevertheless advieable to check the position of the indicators now and again ae the light conditions can be affected by a very slight movement of the camera. t �22 The depth of field ring The depth of field or depth of definition comprises the zone extending from the foreground to the background of the picture which is sharply defined in the reproduced image. This area or depth varies according to the lene aperture chosen and the distance of camera from eubject. In thie connection it should be noted that large aperture settings, as, for inetance,2,2.B glve less depth of field, whereas small aperture settings e. g. ll, o c - - - l 16,22 give greater depth of field. The green numbers at B to the right are exposure times calculated in full seconds which, in the case of unfavourable light conditions, are indicated by the reduced deflection of the exposure meter indicator. The corresponding aperture settings are given opposite these exposure times. To take a photograph, the time eetting ring ehould be set at B and, by pressing the push i L button, the aperture opposite the exposure time reading is set over B. The Compur Rapid Shutter is released, not in the customary manner by pressing a lever at the camera front, but by depressing a button on the body while holding the camera in position for exposure. The camera is arranged to take 11 pictures 2rln*2Lfn" in size. The film is locked from picture to picture. The number of exposures made can be read off on a film countins disc. wind The special construction of the camera renders double exposures impossible, since the shutter can be released only when the film has been wound on to the next section. 4 .,/;. www.orphancameras.com �The Super Ikomat is a 1000/o ooself-erecting'o camera - that iso the lens springs out at once into its working position when the camera is opened with one hand. Focussing on objects at short distances is done by turning the setting disc of the distance meter. This adjustment is communicated to the lens. The distance meter is constructed on an entirely new principle, and is proof against external conditions, vibration, etc. Flatness of the film in the focal plane is ensured by a spring pressure plate in the camera back. �Principle of the automatic shutter Iocking device in conjunction with the film wind The Super Ikomat 2rl+-?tln" i, provided with an arrangement whereby the film, when wound, stops automatically when in position for the following exposure. This therefore dispenses with the necessity of watching the red observation window or counter disc. The shutter is at the same time coupled to the film winding mechanism in such a manner that the release knob cannot be actuated unless the , film has been moved on to the next picture. This obviates the danger of making double exposures and also of winding on the film, without exposing it. The particular attention design of this camera makes it necessary to pay close to several points when loading the film. The shutter can be seto but not released, when the film locking device is disengaged, and it is only in this position that the film should be loaded in the camera. The procedure to be followed when inserting the film is the same as for the film shutter any ordinary 2. rollfilm camera (see page 9 et seq.). With the film locking device in action the film winding key can only be turned from one picture to the next, provided that the shutter has been previously set and released. The camera may not be loaded with film in this position. When releasing the shutter for the 1lth picture the locking device becomes disengaged automatically. 3. Although the film spools when unopened are lightproof, the camera should always be loaded and' unloaded, and the spools stored awo]: in subdued light. By giving a few turns to the winding k"y 2, in the direction of the arrow, draw the paper taut. fn doing this, see that the paper is wound on straight. Ary crookedness of the paper band must be put right before proceeding further. One half of the outer ring on the film winding key 2 is hinged and when lifted in the manner shown in the illustration opposite, affords a convenient grip for winding on the film. 5. Turn the winding k"y 2 until, first, a hand and then the figure I appear in the red observation window 11. 7. 13 Close the window 11 by means of the slide L2. (I-portant when using panchromatic film.) �B. By pressing down the counter disc, turn it in the direction of the arrow to the number 1, when a strong resistance will be felt. Then release the eounter disc. The camera is now ready for the first exposure and the automatic locking device is brought into action at the same time. The film wind is arrested from picture to picture by a mechanical arrangement in the interior of the camera. The counter disc only serves to show the number of exposures made. Turn the winding k"y 2 until it snaps with a click into the spool and turns the spool with it. 17 �III. Making the Exposure 1. Pressure on the knob I will cause the camera to spring automatically into working position (the camera should be tilted in a slightly downward direction). Lens Apertures 2. The required aperture of the lens is obtained by setting the indicating mark on the diaphragm ring L7 to the corresponding number on the scale 18. A higher number on the diaphragm ring denotes a smaller aperture, needs longer _expgsure time, and ? rncreases the depth of focus. For long trme exposures use the special wire release, which is screwed in the bush of the release button. The shutter is opened by a pressure on the head of the wire release and is only closed again r,vhen the catch is disengaged by pressing on the intermediate disc. The View-Finder B. On looking through the eyepiece 5 of the finder, make sure that all obj ects which are to be photographed are seen. Special finderso such as the Albada finder are inserted in the metal shoe 9. 25 �When taking the picture, see that the horizontal and vertical lines of the subject run parallel to the sides of the finder. Tilting the camera either downwards or upwards will make towers., high buildings etc. appear as though they were falling over. General J 9. The camera has a bush for screwirg it to a tripod. 10. After every exposure wind the film on to the next picture. If this is overlooked, the shutter cannot be released. Closing the Camera The camera is closed by pressing on the short upper arms of the struts and at the same time raising the baseboard. Some Hints on Taking Pictures The Super Ikomat 2'ln*2rf n" is fitted with one of two lenses, viz. the Tessar fl2.B or f13.5, both of which have different tasks to perform. While the Tessar //3.5 is only intended for use when it is desired to obtain, at full aperture, sharply defined negatives that allow of considerable enlargemento the Tessar f l2.B will be chosen when a lens with an especially large aperture is preferred. It goes without saying that pictures taken with the Tessar fl2.B at full aperture are not so suitable for enlargement as those taken with smaller stops. It is therefore ad27 �visable to use the full aperture of the lens only when the lighting conditions make it absolutely necessary. For the ordinary type of subject, the lens should preferably be stopped down, say, to f15.6 and the time of exposure adjusted accordingly. ' The large aperture of the lens allows of instantaneous exposures up to l/noo sec. in bright light. In dull weather slower shutter speeds must be should not be taken, used. In that case objects in rapid,-;movement especially if they are close to the carfrera. .:; , When the light is good, the lens can be stopped down to f lll and at this aperture there is the advantage that when focussing on 24 ft. all objects from infinity to LL'7" are in uniformly sharp focus. Two-point Setting For the purpose of making the camera ready for use in the minimum of time, the Super fkomat is also fitted with the popular Zeiss trkon Two-point Setting. For this, the stop is set to about f I L0 and the lens focussed on about 26 ft. The shutter should preferably be set to 'lru sec. The exact setting for aperture and distance are marked by red dots. As shown by the table (ptg" 3l), a wide range of depth of focus is obtained by setting in this way - sufficient for the great majority of subjects. When using Rapid Film the above exposure will still suffice on bright sunshiny winter days during the hours from 9 a. m. to3p.m. Use of Supplementary Lenses The camera lens will not focus on objects nearer to the camera than 5 ft. A supplementary lens or Proxar lens must be used for these. 29 �The distances for which the different lenses can be used, as well as data regardirg the focussing, will be seen from the table at the foot of page 31. Ever-ready Case Needless to say? a valuable camera such as the Super Ikomat should of a not be exposed to weather etc., b4[ must have the protection leather case. The Ever-ready Case iS not one of the ordinary kind but is provided with a flap which is readily opened and allows of the €xposure being made and of all of the the required manipulation taking the latter camera without out of the case. The camera is fixed to the Everready case by means of the screw in the interior of the case. C'est un appareil vraiment «à ressort» où l'ouverture, avec . une seule main, fait jaillir l'objectif dans la position d'emploi et rend l'appareil prêt pour la prise de vue. L'ouverture habituelle de l'abattant et le tirage du chariot jusqu'à la butée de l'infini sont -supprimés. Pour les prises de vues d'objets rapprochés, l'appareil se règle sur chaque distance en tournant l'anneau de la lentille de devant de l'objectif. La planéité de la pellicule exposée à l'impression est assurée par une plaque de pression à ressort dans la cloison arrière de l'appareil. Une nouveauté charmante et pratique est la façon de loger le flexible dans l'appareil de sorte qu'il ne peut ni se perdre ni endommager le soufflet. La petite fenêtre dans le dos de l'appareil permet l'emploi de pellicules panchromatiques sans crai~te de voile. A v an t d'introduire la est recommandé de se familiariser avec toutes les manipulations de l'appareil. L'ouverture de l'appareil • Prendre l'appareil en main et presser sur le bouton à ressort (1) placé en dessous de la clé qui sert à enrouler la pellicule. Ceci dégage l'arrêt de l'abattant qui se déploie vers le bas, l'objectif (5) s'avance automatiquement dans la position de prise de vue et l'on perçoit le bruit d'encliquetage des bras (7) aux deux côtés du soufflet. Les viseurs . • • Chaque appareil est équipé avec un viseur clair_(4) pour prises de vues à hauteur de la _poitrine. Il montre en réduction la même image que celle qui sera projetée par l'objectif sur la pellicule. Les objets qui doivent figurer sur la photographie doivent être vi~ibles dans le viseur. En ouvrant l'appareil, le viseur est disposé normalement pour la prise de vue en format de hauteur. Pour les prises de vues en format de largeur, le 4 5 ... t . �~ viseur · doit être renversé jusqu'à la butée. L'examen de l'image est grandement facilité en utilisant une loupe de viseur. Ce viseur est placé sur un côté de l'appareil et pour s'en servir on le déplie, approche l'œil aussi près que possible de la mire et vise à travers le centre du cadre qui fait voir alors l'image telle qu'elle est vue par l'objectif. L'appareil est 6 Fig. 3 Fermeture de l'appareil en Fermeture de l'appareil • Ramener le viseur dans sa position normale pour prises de vues en format de hauteur. Saisir ensuite l'appareil à deux mains (v. fig. 3) et appuyer avec les pouces sur les deux bras (7), ce qui dégage l'arrêt et permet de fermer 7 �facilement l'abattant. Le porte-objectif et · le soufflet se rangent automatiquement par ce mouvement. Tenue de l'appareil pendant la prise de vue La construction de l'appareil a été spécialement prévue pour en faire un appareil à main et il servira surtout aux prises de vues instantanées faites à main libre. Le saisir, pour cela; fermement de la main gauche et l'appuyer contre le corps pour le maintenir aussi im.t.nobile ·que possi~le. De la main droite ·a ctionner l'obturateur au moyen du déclencheu.r métallique· (v. fig. 4). La tenue de l'appareil en se servant du viseur iconomètrè est montrée dans la fig. 5. Il faut faire attention à ce que les lignes horizontales et verticales de l'objet visé sont parallèles aux 'limites correspondantes du cadre ou il y aura une mauvaise image. Les prises de vues qui exigent une exposition plus lente qu;uri · 25ème de seconde doivent être faites à l'aide d'un pied. L'écrou de pied pour les prises de vues en format de hauteur ( 8) se trouve sous l'abattant, et celui pour le format horizontal (9) sur le côté de l'appareil (du côté de la clé). Si l'on veut pendre des vues en hauteur sans pied, on peut placer l'appareil sur une table ou le disposer de façon à ce que l'on puisse déplier le petit pied (6) qui se trouve sous l'abattant. --r Introduction de la pellicule Les bobines de pellicules peuvent être chargées dàns l'appareil à la lumière du jour, de même que retirées après l'exposition. On est donc indépendant de la chambre noire pour le renouvellement du support sensible, ce qui est très avantageux, surtout en voyage. Il se recommande toutefois de n'en pas entreprendre le changement aux rayons directs du soleil, mais au moins à l'ombre du corps. · En poussant dans le sens de la flèche le bo uton (3) qui se trouve sous la poignée de l'appareil, le dos, appliqué au corps de la chambre, se trouve libéré et peut être ouvert. Dans un appareil neuf, une bobine vide se trouve dans le magasin supérieur, elle est 10 • Fig. 5 Tenue de l'appareil en travaillant avec le viseur à cadre pour une prise de vue en format de largeur 11 �destinée à recevoir la pellicule impressionnée. Elle peut être tournée à l'aide de la clé (2). L'axe de la bobine est creux aux deux extrémités afin de pouvoir être appliqué sur les pivots à ressorts destinés à recevoir la bobine. Pour placer la bobine vide dans le magasin supérieur on presse l'extrémité qui a un trou rond (Ü ) contre le pivot à ressort, - l'autre extrémité munie d'une fente ( G ) est dirigée du côté de la clé, - et on tourne la clé jusqu'à ce que sa partie intérieure rentre dans la ~ent~. et entraîne la bobine destinée à recevoir la pellicule impressionée. La bobine pleine est introduite dans le magasin inférieur, en ayant soin de l'enga~e: d'abord sur le pivot à ressort. Le bout taille en pointe de la bande de papier protectrice doit être dirigé vers la bobine vide. Après avoir arraché la bande de fermeture tirer l'extrémité du papier protecteur ' par-dessus les deux rouleaux guide et l' entrer dans ' la fente la plus làrge de la bobine vide. En donnant quelques tours de cl~, la bande de papier se trouvera tendue. Pendant cette opération, il faut . veiller soigneusement à ce que la bande de papier s'enroule bien drojit (fig. 6) et ~qu'elle ne 12 .. 1 Fig. 6 La fac.on d'enrouler la pellic.ule sur la bobine ' soit pas poussée sur les bords de la bobine. La pellicule devrait être de suite rétablje correctement si un enroulement en biais se produisait. Pour rendre l'appareil prêt à la prise de vue, refermer le dos et tourner la clé jusqu'à 13 . 'La petite fenêtre permet l'emploi de pellicules panchromatiques dans l'appareil sans avoir à craindre un voile. 14 La dernière partie de la pellicule ayant .été impressionnée, enrouler complètement la pellicule et se convaincre que cette opération a été menée à bien en voyant le bout de la bande glisser dans la fenêtre rouge . Ouvrir ensuite le dos de l'appareil de la façon déjà décrite, maintenir tendu d~une main le papier protecteur et l'enrouler complètement sur la bobine en tournant la clé. Cacheter la pellicule avec le papier collant prévu pour cet usage et sortir la bobine en la pressant à nouveau contre le pivot à ressor~ du magasin et en la soulevant en même temps (Fig. 7 ). . 15 j �' Poses longues Les obturateurs a) Obturateur Derval, pour instantanés de lf2s , lfso et lit oo de seconde et poses à volonté et ' ' Amener la lettre Z (T) du disque (R) sur la marque gravée en haut du disque. Après un mouvement préliminaire de 12 secondes environ l'exposition se fait comme d'habitude. Obturateur Compur ~ F 1 i J Tourner la couronne (R) pour amener la lettre B en regard de l'index (A). Une pression sur le levier (D) ou sur le déclencheur flexible ouvre l'obturateur qui se referme aussitôt que cette pression cesse. Ne pas presser une seconde fois, car alors l'obturateur s'ouvrirait à nouveau. Instantanés sans le déclenchement automatique à retardement Tourner la couronne (R) pour amener le chiffre correspondant à la durée d'exposition désirée en regard de l'index (A). 19 . �1 Les chiffres indiquent des fractions de seconde (25 = I/2s de seconde).- Armer ensuite l'obturateur en poussant le levier (1) vers la droite jusqu'à la butée. - Actionner le levîer (D) ou le déclencheur flexible pour mettre l'obturateur en marche. Le levier (1) ne s'emploie que pour les instantanés. Quand l'index de la couronne (R) marque T ou B, il est impossible de déplacer ce levier. L'augmentation de vitesse de 1 à 1/Ioo de seconde étant continue, on peut faire marquer des valeurs intermédiaires à l'index de la couronne. Le réglage de l'obturateur est identique à celui qui a été indiqué pour les instantanés ordinaires. Il faut seulement, après avoir poussé le levier (1) jusqu'à la butée, déplacer dans la direction de la flèche gravée le petit bouton (F), t;e trouvant au-dessus de l'index (A), puis pousser le levier (1) encore pl us loin à droite jusqu'à une seconde butée. Si, 21 ' �ceci fait, on appuie sur le levier de déclenchement (D) ou sur le déclencheur flexible, il se produit d'abord un mouvement · préli~ minaire et ce n'est qu'ensuite, 12 secon·des plus tard environ, que l'exposition se fait comme d'habitude. Ce dispositif prodigieusement pratique permet à l'amateur de se photographier soi-même, soit seul soit parmi un groupe d'amis. U-ne série des Ikonta 6 x 9 cm avec obturateur Telma est livrée sans ce dispositif; ces appareils sont munis d'un flexible assez court qui en fermant l'appareil est placé devant le porte-objectif. . ~ ~n armant l'obturateur pour ce genre d'instantanés, nous recommandons d'exercer sur le porteobjectif une contre-pression, pour faciliter cet armement et pour . ménager les parties métalliques du devant. Le Flexible Le flexible, livré avec l'appareil, doit être vissé sur l'écrou 0 de l'obturateur (voir pages 16, 17 et 20). Avant de fermer l'appareil on dévisse le flexible et le passe par le petit anneau, et il sera retenu par la petite butée devant cet anneau. Pour sortir le flexible, il suffit de soulever le bout et de l'en tirer dehors. 22 J f Fig. 8 Placement du flexible Le diaphragme Sous l'objectif se trouve une aiguille mobile (E) (voir pages 16, 17 et 20) qui peut être réglée sur divers nombres. Son déplacement modifie_l'ouverture de l'objectif. La grandeur de cette ouverture diminue en raison de la 23 �croissance des nombres du diaphragme. Diaphragmer procure un avantage qu'il ne faut pas méconnaître, car la netteté générale de l'image augmente avec la croissance -des nombres du diaphragme. La diminution de l'ouverture de l'objectif se fait naturellem~nt aux dépens de la clarté de l'image projetée à travers l'objectif, le temps d'exposition devra donc être augmenté proportionnellement. On obtiendra le plus facilement le temps de pose exact pour chaque ouverture de diaphragme au moyen du tableau de pose, livré avec l'appareil, ou on le .d éterminera à l'aide du «Diaphot Zeiss Ikon» qui est un photomètre optique stlr. L'échelle des distances L'échelle des distances est gravée sur l'anneau de l'objectif, ce qui permet, en faisant tourner ce dernier, de régler les distances 00 (signe de l'infini), jusqu'à 1,5 resp. 2 m. Des réglages intermédiaires à ceux marqués sur l'échelle, comme par exemple 7 rn, peuvent être facilement appréciés. On ne doit jamais s'approcher à plus de 1,5 rn de l'objet à photographier, car autrement les proportions de l'image paraîtront faussées. 24 Il est à recommander aux amateurs avertis, de connaître l'étendue du champ de netteté pour Jes différents réglages du diaphragme et de l'échelle des distances. Nous avons joint, dans ce but, une petite table qui donne les distances en mètres. On peut en outre cont1aître, au moyen de cette table, sur quelle distance et sur quel diaphragme doit être réglé l'appareil pour photographier des sujets qui possèdent une grande étendue en profQndeur comme, par exemple, des paysages avec premier plan, un grand groupe dans lequel les premières personnes sont à 3 rn et les plus éloignées à 7 rn de l'appareil, etc. Pour ce dernier cas, la table permet de constater qu'avec un diaphragme 11 et un réglage des distances de 5 rn la profondeur de netteté s'étend de 10 à 3 rn, un groupe, ayant une étendue en profondeur de 3 à 7 rn viendra donc suffisamment net. La prise de vue L'excellente luminosité des objectifs permet de faire par un jour de soleil des instantanés 1/2so resp. 1/3oome de seconde avec 'te diaphragme 1: 4,5 ou de 1/toome de seconde avec l'ouverture 1: 6,3. - 25 �' ' Par un ciel couvert il faut employer des vitesses plus petites et ne pas photographier des objet~ trop mouvementés, à moins qu'ils ne se trouvent à une assez grande distance. Par un temps de soleil on peut se servir du diaphragme 8 et on a alors l'avantage que tous les objets à partir d'une distance de 9 rn jusqu'à l'infini seront nets. Pour prises de vues de portraits et d'objets très rapprochés (mais pas à moins de 2 rn), employer la grande ouverture du diaphr~gme. Important: Pour avoir l'Ikonta aussitôt prêt lorsqu'il s'agit de faire des instantanés à l'imprévu, sans avoir le temps de refléchir ou de se préparer, nous recommandons · de régler l'appareil de la façon suivante: Diaphragme environ 1:11 Ce réglage est Echelle de mise au point marqué par des environ 10 rn points rouges et Obturateur 1/2sme de seconde. • Avec ce réglage tous les objets depuis le grand lointain (oo) jusqu'à un rapprochement de 3 rn viendront nets et le temps de pose suffit même par un jour d'hiver (entre 10 et 14 heures). 26 Lentilles supplémentaires: a) Ikonta 6,5 x 11 cm Pour ·prises de vues à une distance de 1,8 rn il faut employer d es lentilles supplémentaires (pour le Novar la lentille No. 995/ 9 et pour le Tessar la lentille Proxar 0,5 x 37). b) Ikonta 6 x 9 cm _ Avec le Tessar et le Do min ar la mise au point est limitée à 1,5 rn, et avec le N ovar à 2 rp. Afin de pouvoir photographier des objets plus proches, on doit employer pour le Tessar et Dominar la lentille Proxar 1x 32, et pour le N ovar la lentille supplémentaire No. 995/ 8. c) lkonta 5 x 7,5 cm Le N ovar n'a pas besoin, d'une lentille supplémentaire. Avec le Tessar il faut employer la lentille Proxar 1 x 24. Tables pour l'emploi de lentilles supplémentaires voir pages 28 à 31.
